These findings showed that 81% of global organizations experienced an increase in cybersecurity threats during pandemic. The threat levels are expected to continue rising well into the new Year. Businesses can expect an increase in cyber threats as leaders and employees count down the days to the holiday season. These are the key findings:
- More than half (51%) of Australian organizations have experienced downtime as a result of a cyber-related concern in the past 18 months. 82% of these occurred during peak season.
- 83% of Australian IT professionals believe that maintaining a fully-staffed security team during peak periods is more difficult than it should be.
- 87% of Australian IT professionals expect a moderate to substantial impact on their businesses due to the holiday season’s increased demand for their services and products.
- Cyber threats to supply chain, travel and ecommerce are creating a “Everything Shortage” holiday season.
“Australians are excited to enjoy the holiday season after a difficult lockdown period in 2021. They also want to spend some of their savings on treasured activities. This will be a huge opportunity for cyber criminals to exploit businesses that are more concerned with their bottom line than their cybersecurity infrastructure. Businesses of all sizes must keep cybersecurity in mind.” Bastian Schmederer is Senior Regional Director for Australia & New Zealand at McAfee Enterprise.
Matthew stated, “It is crucial that every business of scale evaluates and prioritizes security technology to keep themselves protected, especially during peak season like the holidays.”

Australia fights back

Cybercriminals have gained access to sensitive and personal information in individuals’ computer systems. Cybercrime is a constant battle between law enforcement agencies, the private sector, governments, and cyber criminals.
Australia is working to educate people about the dangers of internet use.
A number of education and awareness-raising websites have been published by the Australian government to help consumers use the internet safely. According to the Australian government, a lack in technological literacy can lead to more Internet frauds.
Australian officials have also announced several public information portals that will provide more detailed information about cyber threats. These portals are intended to protect individual privacy and increase information sharing on the Internet.
