Today, we are going to talk about PSAs. If you’re not familiar with the term, don’t worry, we’ll review what it is in today’s article. Read on to learn more. This blog is all about PSAs, Have you ever heard of PSAs?
What do we mean by pressure sensitive adhesive (PSAs) tape?
A pressure sensitive adhesive tape (also often called PSAs) is a major category of adhesive tapes. Basically, it is a mostly thin, flexible material that has a single or double-sided coating. Pressure sensitive tape adheres to a variety of substrates as long as it is applied with pressure to clean, dry surfaces. The use of PSAs does not require solvents, water or heat to activate the adhesive. Adhesion is directly influenced by the amount of pressure used to apply the adhesive to the surface. Now that we have defined what a pressure sensitive tape is, let’s define what is not considered pressure sensitive. By definition, a pressure sensitive tape must be applied under pressure. Therefore, anything that sticks without pressure cannot be considered a pressure sensitive tape. Any tape that requires solvent, water or heat to activate the adhesive is not a pressure sensitive tape.
What is it used for and what are its benefits?
PSAs are used for a wide range of applications. In fact, it is not uncommon for new uses for PSAs to be discovered every day. Overall, PSAs should be considered a true fastening and assembly solution. PSAs are valued for their ease of use and low cost compared to conventional fastening systems. Let’s take a closer look at what’s involved. Let’s move on to the benefits of pressure sensitive tapes (PSAs). PSAs are known to be thin and lightweight materials. In some cases, they can dampen vibrations and reduce noise. They are convenient to use because they do not require treatment of the surfaces on which they are to be used. The application is therefore very fast. Visually, it’s also very nice!
What types of adhesives are used for PSAs tapes?
There are 3 main types of adhesives: rubber, acrylic and silicone.
Natural and synthetic rubber-based adhesives are formulated with adhesive resins, oils and antioxidants. This is the most cost-effective type of adhesive. While it offers fast bonding capability, rubber adhesive is not recommended for high temperature applications.
Adhesives formulated with acrylic polymers generally offer better long-term aging and greater resistance to solvents and environmental factors. They are known to be stronger than traditional rubber adhesive and are capable of withstanding higher temperatures.
Adhesives formulated with silicone polymers are relatively expensive and have a very low initial tack. However, they can withstand higher temperatures than rubber and acrylic adhesives.
To find out exactly which PSAs you should use, talk to an industry professional such as ELKEM. Their website will help you to better differentiate between the different types of PSAs. Get more information.
What is it important to consider when choosing the right PSA tape?
To choose the right PSAs for your needs, you need to ask yourself the right questions. For example, ask yourself what material the adhesive is intended to adhere to? What weather conditions will the PSAs be exposed to? How will you apply the PSAs or what do you expect from it? Are you expecting a permanent or temporary bond?
