A few weeks ago, Donald Trump helped broker a peace deal to make relations better between UAE and Israel. Soon, there were reports of him being nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for 2021.
The nomination was given by Christian Tybring-Gjedde, one of the members of Norwegian Parliament. He lauded President Trump for the efforts to resolve protracted conflicts across the world. Tybring-Gjedde reported that Trump has good merit of trying to bring peace between different countries. He also said that Trump is more deserving compared to other nominees. Christian has been a parliament member for four tenures. He was also the chairman of the Norwegian delegation to NATO Parliamentary Assembly.
What did the Nobel Peace Prize nomination record?
While submitting his letter to Nobel Committee, Tybring-Gjedde said that the Trump government had played an important role in establishing relations between UAE and Israel. Moreover, other countries in the Middle East are expected to go into the possibility of cooperation as well.
He cited in his letter than the President’s main move was to mediate between conflicting countries. Moreover, he wants to create new dynamics of protracted conflicts like the dispute regarding Kashmir between Pakistan and India. Also, he wants to help reduce conflicts between South and North Korea and deal with nuclear capabilities with North Korea.
The official praised Donald Trump for removing several troops from Middle East. He said that Trump broke a 39-year-old policy crafted by American Presidents for starting wars or keeping the US involved in armed conflicts. The last President who avoided such a move was Jimmy Carter, also a Nobel Peace Prize recipient.
Why Donald Trump winning the prize is justified according to Norwegian official?
Nobel Peace Prize nomination by Tybring-Gjedde is not the first one received by Donald Trump. One more Norwegian official had submitted the same in 2018 after Trump’s Singapore summit along with Kim Jong Un. The Prime Minister of Japan also did the same, and Trump didn’t win that time.
The nominator went onto say that he is not a major Trump supporter and the committee must look at facts. They should see what Trump has done and not how he behaves. He also went onto say that the ones who have received the prize in the past have not done what Trump has. The man also stated that Barack Obama had done nothing.
In 2009, former President Barack Obama received the Nobel Peace Prize. The committee said his efforts extraordinary to improve international cooperation and diplomacy.
The decision was made within nine months of the first term during Obama’s presidentship. It was also criticized by people, including Donald Trump, who was just a citizen back then. The former President of Poland, Lech Walesa, and also a 1983 Nobel winner, had also said that it was early for Obama to receive the award.
Barack Obama said that he was surprised and felt humble due to the decision taken by the Nobel Committee. He also said that he doesn’t think he deserved to be amidst of all the other transformative figures who were honored for the prize. He was also inspired by the other winners who had brought peace to the world.
US Presidents who have received Nobel Peace Prize
Apart from Obama, three other US Presidents have received the award:
- President Theodore Roosevelt won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906 for negotiating peace in the Russo-Japanese war
- President Woodrow Wilson won the award in 1920 for the “leading architect of the League of Nations.”
- Next was Jimmy Carter in 2002 for his unending efforts to resolve international conflicts with peace
A five-member team from the committee, chosen by Norwegian Parliament, will decide who gets the honor. The recipient of the prize winner for 2021 will be announced after October 2021.
