Mistakes To Avoid For Guaranteed Success In eLearning

Paying close attention to the visual design of your e-learning course is very crucial. It can be a game-changer, literally. That being said, visual design elements can either elevate or lower the overall impact of your e-learning course on your audience.

Are you dissatisfied with the success of your e-learning course? Wondering what might be the reason for it? Chances are that it must be the visual appearance. You might be making some fundamental design mistakes that might have gone unnoticed, especially if you are a beginner in this industry.

But, don’t worry! These aren’t hard to fix once you’re aware of them. And, to enhance your knowledge of the same, we have mentioned some visual design mistakes you should avoid when you plan to create your next e-learning course. Read on and find out!

1. Text, text, and text

One of the major pitfalls associated with the visual design of an e-learning course is, of course, too much text. Course designers don’t realize this but sometimes they focus too much on adding information that they completely forget about the visual appeal of the course. It’s good to not miss out any detail but at the same time, you must not fill your audience’s screen with too much text. This will be a major turn off and your audience’s interest will vanish.

Tip: Combine your content with images, videos, audios, animations, and illustrations in order to engage your audience and create a more holistic experience.

2. Distorted Images

An e-learning course with distorted images is a classic mistake that is witnessed quite often. Obviously, course designers don’t do it on purpose but they lack attention. Images get distorted upon resizing. Hence, they must take notice of it and pay attention to the details. It is suggested to resize the images (if necessary) in a manner that does not affect its aspect ratio.

Tip: In the first place, you should always select high-quality images (greater than 1000 pixels ideally) so that there’s no scope of distortion even if you resize it. When resizing, make sure you drag the image from its corners so that its aspect ratio is not affected.

3. Not sticking to the colour theme

Colour and colour theme is the first thing that catches the attention of your audience. Using too many colours and not sticking to the colour theme is going to have a huge impact on your learners. Whether you choose colours that are brand compliant or the ones that you like, make sure to not use too many as it can make it difficult for the users to concentrate on the text on the screen.

Tip: Stick to your company’s style guide and it’s best to choose brand colours. This way you can be sure you are not using too many colours and at the same time sticking to the overall theme. On the other hand, if you want to make your own custom colour scheme, there are various tools that can help you do it.

4. Too many bullet points

As soon as your audience sees too many bullet points, their mind automatically suggests them to skip the information and move on to the next. For a simple reason that they don’t wish to be bombarded with too much information at the same time.

Tip: It’s best to remove the bullet points and present the same information in a different manner. One of which includes an infographic.

5. Using common stock photos

Well, if you think you’ve seen a particular picture before while researching, chances are that you have. And, that too numerous times!

So, skip that picture right away because these pictures are what negatively impact the appearance of your e-learning course. Using such images might give a bad and wring impression to your audience and make your course look outdated and cheap.

Tip: Always use high-quality, good-looking stock photos which you feel will grab your audience’s attention in just a glance. And, for it, you need to research well.
