Maybe you want to be an entrepreneur? Perhaps you want to be a manager in an office? Whatever the case may be, you’re hoping to improve your leadership skills.

The big question is: how? How do students go about honing their leadership abilities? There are a number of ways to enhance leadership ability, six of which we’re going to discuss below.

1. Start a Group

One way to foster your leadership skills is to create a group. Whether this group is a band, a crocheting circle, or otherwise, if you start it, you will immediately be in a leadership position. As such, you’ll need to organize, delegate, and help the group to grow.

Now, this might feel a little uncomfortable at first. That’s okay. Remember: this is about practice; few individuals are born leaders.

Take things slowly, assess the decisions you make, and constantly try to make yourself better. It won’t happen overnight, but over time, you’ll start to become a more effective and assured leader. This will bode well for any future endeavors that you might have in mind.

2. Learn to Listen

Leadership isn’t about being an authoritarian. If you start bossing people around, you’ll lose their respect, and they’ll eventually cut and run. The goal is to move the team along as, well, a team.

How do you, as the leader, accomplish this? There’s a great deal that goes into it, but perhaps the most important aspect is to listen to others.

Sure, you probably have some great ideas. But it’s unlikely that you’re the only one. Your team members likely have something to contribute as well and you don’t want to stifle potential contributions by being closed-off to others.

You don’t have to run with every suggestion that your subordinates make. But you should, at the very least, hear those suggestions out. Doing so will not only enhance the capabilities of the group but it will also help other group members to feel valued.

3. Prioritize Discipline

In order to be an effective leader, you must be disciplined. A lack of discipline not only leads to inefficiency but it also sets a bad example for the team at large. As such, you need to start prioritizing discipline in your everyday life.

Establish a set diet; maintain a schedule; work out on a regular basis; get work done early instead of putting it off until later. Be mindful of everything you do and ensure that it’s contributing positively to your life.

Leaders can’t be lazy; they can’t take shortcuts; they can’t procrastinate. They have to be the shining example that the rest of the team looks up to.

4. Be Empathetic

Human beings aren’t machines. They have limits and they aren’t always able to perform at the same level. As a leader, you need to understand this, and need to respond to it accordingly; in other words, you need to be empathetic.

Let’s say that one of your team members’ children has been in the hospital. Odds are, that team member is going to have trouble being as productive as he or she usually is.

It’s your responsibility, as the leader, to accommodate this and not push the team member too hard. Pushing him or her too hard is not only going to cause resentment but it might also cause him or her to quit. Not to mention, it could turn other team members against you as well.

This isn’t to say that you need to eliminate all of that person’s responsibilities. However, you should show a little more leniency than you usually would.

5. Always Be Learning

The leader of a group or project doesn’t necessarily have to be the best at everything. What he or she does need to be a leadership abilities, however, is highly educated on the matters at hand. As such, to be an effective leader, you must always be learning.

Ask questions to members of your team, read up on different facets of the project in your free time, and gain a full understanding of what’s going on. This will not only help you to more realistically approach projects but it will also help you to be more empathetic to the members of your team.

In essence, be a sponge. Never rest on your laurels and never assume that you know it all. There’s always something that you could become more knowledgeable about, and it doesn’t stop at academic strengths.

6. Fill Up Your Schedule

One of the most difficult aspects of being a leader is having to handle a great many responsibilities at one time. Being able to multitask and switch gears is what turns an average leader into an excellent leader. But you’re not going to get to that point overnight; you have to practice.

For this reason, if you’re looking to improve your leadership skills, you should practice by filling up your schedule as much as possible. The busier your schedule is, the more adept you’ll become at handling a number of different tasks in a short amount of time. You’ll be forced into some uncomfortable situations but will, ultimately, be able to overcome them.

Eventually, what once felt like a great deal of work will start to feel small in comparison. At that point, you’ll be able to handle anything that comes your way.

Leadership Abilities Can Take You to the Next Level

If you want to be more than just a cog in the machine, you have to have leadership abilities. Leadership capabilities take you to the next level, allowing you to live life on your terms. Utilize the tips above and you’re sure to become the leader you’ve always wanted to be.
